Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope following their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an unprecedented summit on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the meeting, they voiced optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a connection and persisting to build that bond is a step in the right direction," they commented.

Hickey concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
